 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation"se'lena kinta'nija 'pere April 16, 1971 - March 31, 1995) was an American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion led to her being the "Queen" of Tejano music. She was among the most popular performers from the Mexican-American genre of the late 20th century. In 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third place on their list of "Greatest Latino artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums and Latin chart of songs. Her fashion choices earned her the nickname "Tejano Madonna". She is also among the most famous Latin performers of all time and has been credited with bringing the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest of the Quintanilla family, she debuted on the scene of music as one of the members of the band Selena y Los Dinos, which included her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla Quintanilla. In the 80s, she was frequently criticized and was refused bookings at various venues in Texas for singing Tejano music--a male-dominated music genre. Her popularity grew when she won the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist-of-the Year in 1987. It was awarded nine times. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and released her self-titled debut album in the same year. At the time, her brother became her principal music producer and songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) which reached top of the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months.
